After the Interview: What You Must Do Next
After the interview, as you walk back to the reception hall with your interviewer, remember to thank her for taking the time and for answering your questions. Be careful to say you enjoyed meeting her and that you hope to go through to the next stage in the selection process. Be polite to everybody: in particular say goodbye to the reception staff as well as your interviewer. It may surprise you but receptionists are often asked for their opinion of new candidates. When you get outside and away from view, stop awhile and:
• Examine how you thought it went and write yourself some notes.
• Consider your performance and how well you handled the questions they asked.
• Congratulate yourself on the things that went well.
• Review your interview technique.
• Were you too vague / arrogant / unassertive / aggressive?
• Could you improve after the interview? And how?
• If you could do the interview again, what would you do differently?
• Make notes of what you were asked and your answers; you might be called for a second interview.
• Write a thank-you letter to the interviewer.
• This letter can reinforce the information you gave during the interview and can help to overcome any of the points you feel you may have missed during the interview.
• Always try to get some feedback on your performance.
Use this opportunity to wrap up after the interview well and you multiply your chances of future interview success massively.
